GLENN HOPPERT “Hop” 1947-2005
Awarded Silver and Bronze Star for Valor – Vietnam 1966-67

Glenn visiting his former Captain at the AT&T National Pro-AM Tournament at Peeble Beach in February 2004 |
MY FRIEND GLENN
Glenn had just retired from the DC police force,
He was a quiet kind of guy who I met on the golf course.
We quickly became good friends,
Playing golf and reminiscing about life trends.
Police work, Vietnam, divorce, and golf were the norm,
For a couple of guys who shared similar storms.
You could see that he tried to take things in stride,
However, you knew that he held a lot of things inside.
His golf was pure on most of his rounds,
He always kept his feet on the ground.
He often mentioned Donna, Steven and Darren with pride,
About promotion, tragedy, adventure and went along for the ride.
His battle with cancer was a courageous one,
However, a battle that could not have been won.
He was a good husband, father and friend,
And will always be remembered as a man called Glenn.

You said it best. In the short time we knew Glen we could tell he was someone special. Have you ever noticed how God calls the best - first? Our loss is Heaven's gain.
With deep regrets,

I only knew Glenn for a short period of time. In that time, I knew Glenn to be a gentleman, an excellent golfer, and when I heard about his war record, he was indeed an American hero. I am thankful to Glenn for protecting our freedom and the American way of life. May he be remembered here in this memorial among the other veterans who have served our country bravely and honorably. Susan and I feel privileged to have known him.

Dave, I was very sorry to here about Glen. I knew he had cancer, but I had no idea it was acting so quickly, as it seems we played golf just a while ago.Do you know where I can make a contribution in his memory? Thanks
Bob Hein
Dave, Will be happy to contribute to the cost of the paver. Sorry for Glenn’s family and close friends but relieved that his struggle is ended.

I will always remember Glenn’s rival high school ring and when he almost drove the lake on the 11th hole.

I wish I had a swing like Glenn. He was a true gentleman.
Jerry Fennell |
Over Bacardi and Coke, his afternoon thing
He’d swear on his grave, that his Cobra was king
He’d tell colorful stories, and laugh with his eyes
Most simply said, Glenn was one of the guys

It's true; Glenn was a very special person. My contact with him was limited but it was obvious that Glenn was someone you wanted to be around. He was certainly competitive (he beat me more than once!), friendly, honest and very genuine. I'm very sorry that I did not have more time to get to know Glenn better.

Excerpt from note from Carol and Kevin below:
“I didn’t know that Glenn had won such recognition for his heroism in Vietnam. We all saw that bravery continue during his fight with cancer.
Kevin always spoke so highly of him, before and after he got sick. I remember Kevin always enjoyed playing golf with him and would say that Glenn was “a true gentleman”. “

I remember the great stories Glenn would share with us at the Yacht club and Taylors. One of my fondest memories of Glenn was from last year’s US Open at Shinnecock, New York. Glenn, Donovan McCann and I enjoyed a full day of watching some great golf and an enjoyable dinner in Manhattan. We miss you Glenn and you'll always be with us.
